Patrick Fogarty Bunkie Build
Bunkie is constructed out of 6" x 10" white pine. This year we have expanded the envelope to an 18' x 26' However, a 4' x 18' front porch is included in that envelope. There is a 12' x 22' loft and we use an attic truss system to accomodate that. This puts the total square footage at 660 sq. ft. (but subtract the thickness of the walls and you are losing a foot off the length and width). There is the option of extending the loft out over the front porch to gain that bit of loft space. The cabin comes as a dismantled "timber-only" kit with exception of the log bolt hardware which is two 12" lag bolts every 32 inches of linear log length. Timber-only does not include roof sheating as we don't sheet the roof during the original build but it does include the floor deck. We sell the cabin for cost of materials and last year it sold for $15000. This allows us to purchase the materials for next year's build. The plans were drawn by Ron Reid of Norlog Buidling Systems of Minnesing Ontario.

Shawn Nugent - President of the ODCA and Brett Carron - Chairperson of Construction Technology at Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School along with students who are part of the Specialist High Skills Major program show the beginnings of a recently completed 1 1/2 storey log cabin. The cabin was sold with all the funds going back into the SMHS program. The ODCA and Patrick Fogarty worked together on the program to encourage young people to consider construction trades with the hope of eventually helping to alleviate the labour shortage in the industry.
